Personal Fall Arrest Systems (PFAS) are a critical part of personal safety in the workplace and comprise of 3 components: the anchor, the harness and the connecting device. This All Safety Products newsletter reviews when such fall arrest systems should be used and how to select and use PFAS.
In order to select the correct fall protection equipment, the user must first calculate the fall distance. If the fall distance is less than 18 1/2 feet, always use a self-retracting lifeline. If the fall distance is greater than 18 1/2 feet, a shock-absorbing lanyard or self-retracting lifeline may be used.
The safety and technical requirements for Personal Fall Arrest Systems (PFAS) are detailed in OSHA CFR 1926 and summarized as follows:
- Workers are required to wear personal fall protection above 6 feet.
- The anchor points must be able to support 5,000 lbs per worker.
- The safety harness should fit snuggly for full range of movement.
- After a fall, a shock-absorbing lanyard that has been deployed must be taken out of service.
- A person must be brought to a complete stop and limit maximum deceleration to 3 1/2 feet.
- Do not attach systems to guard rails or hoists.

Always inspect systems for wear and damage and be aware of imitations or no-name brands. Look for specific applications for your personal protection equipment. Make sure the harness fits snuggly and the lifelines are the correct length for the fall distances.
