Noise Reduction Rating (NRR)
The NRR is a single number rating system representing the average noise reduction, in decibels, that a hearing protection device might provide if worn properly. EPA requires all hearing protection products carry the NRR label. The challenge with this rating is that the testing process is done in a laboratory and the test subjects are fitted by a lab technician. Small increases in dB level represent enormous increases in noise level and typically workers fit the plugs themselves in a variety of settings.
Hearing Protection Information
A. Disposable Foam Plugs are compressed or shaped prior to insertion, with varying sizes and shapes to accommodate the work force. The most popular variety is made of expandable, slow recovery foam.
B. Push-in Foam Plugs offer the no-roll down convenience of premolded plugs with exceptional comfort of a foam plug,
C. Premolded Reusable Plugs are made from flexible materials that are preformed to fit the ear. They are generally available with a joining cord.
D. Banded Earplugs, also called canal caps, consist of pods or flexible tips on a lightweight headband. Since they are easy to put on, they are ideal for use in and out of noisy environments.
E. Reusable Earplugs and Passive Earmuffs have flat attenuating hearing protectors engineered to enhance communication. They minimize distortion of voice-level frequencies.
F. Earmuffs have rigid cups with soft plastic cushions that seal around the ears to block noise. For very loud noises, wear muffs and plugs together for approximately 5 dB of additional protection.
G. Electronic Earmuffs incorporate music listening, amplification and high-level noise suppression. These also provide easier communication in impulse noise environments. Generally require batteries.
